reviewed on Nintendo switch
super meat boy is a very hard game; it takes you tens, maybe hundreds of tries just to beat one level. But does the difficulty make it not fun to play? Let’s find out.
GAMEPLAY
super meat boy’s gameplay is basically like a normal platformer, but Meat Boy, while running, is super fast and his movement is chaotic. However, I never found myself sliding off platforms when I land; that’s because the controls are also very responsive and nice. Also, it’s very, very hard. This game is not for casual gamers—it’s HARD but always fair. I never found myself dying because of some random reason; it’s always your fault when you die, not the game’s.
VISUALS
super meat boy’s visuals aren’t great; they look fine, and the cutscenes are really good, but I don’t think the visuals while playing are that good. They look a bit too simple, in my opinion.
AUDIO
the sound effects in the game are fine; I mean they work, but they’re not great. However, the music really hits hard; it sounds really cool, and I think it’s really great. I love the vibe it gives off, but the sound effects aren’t great.
LEVEL DESIGN
the level design mostly consists of single screen rooms where you have to get to the other side. you respawn immediately after dying, which means you can easily replay the level if you die. the level design is great and very good.
FINAL VERDICT
super meat boy delivers a hard but fair experience with great level design and a banger soundtrack. It only falls short when it comes to sound effects and visuals.
SCORE 8/10
